Naive or Informed?

12:19 PM, 13 April 2004

Last night we had our third Bradley Method childbirth class and it was all about the first stage of labor and what most hospitals will try to do in the way of using drugs to "facilitate" labor. Not that I wasn't happy with our decision to pursue the Bradley Method before, but after hearing what they will suggest be done to uninformed parents to be, I'm really glad we decided to go the education route. That is definitely one part of many that really drew me to this, along with the acknowledgment that I am as much involved in the delivery and well being of mom and baby alike as the mother.

Sometimes though, I must wonder if I really want to know all that we are being told. It's almost scary what really goes on and the effects that those decisions have on all aspects of life. But I am glad that we decided to do this. I would much rather be informed and be able to make logical decisions for ourselves than be coerced into something that we may regret later.

having done it, i can say it's a great relief in all the craziness to recognize points in labor. you welcome those things because you know what they are, and you know things are progressing.

claire dazed out at one point near the end, and if i hadn't expected that to happen, i would have been pretty worried.
