Potty Trained?

For the past several weeks, Sarah has been waking up from her naps at school dry. Her teachers have been putting her on the potty, and she has been going. They have also been sitting her on the potty at various other times throughout the day, and the results have been mixed. Not bad for beginning at just 2 years old. We have also been doing the same, admittedly not as well as we could be.

Well, the tides have turned this morning. She woke up completely dry, so we sat her on the potty, and she went. Great!! The better part, once she got to school, she was telling Karen that she had to go to the potty, and went running back to her classroom. Again, she went! We're so proud of her!

We'll see how things go the rest of the day while she is playing and such, but this is definately a step in the right direction. Hopefully we will be out of diapers soon. The're expensive!

Big Girl Bed

Last night was the second night in a row that Sarah slept in her Dora toddler bed. We put her in it on Saturday afternoon for a nap after trying unsuccessfully for a while to get her to take a nap. We knew we were going to be out late that night to see the fireworks, and knew that without a nap, she would be misearable or miss them completely. Bribery with the toddler bed seemed to work as she napped. We decided we would see how she did for the couple of hours for her nap, and then maybe let her sleep in it overnight. She did really well for her nap, so Saturday night she got to sleep in the bed. We only had one minor issue about 3:00 in the morning where she had turned herself and her legs were hanging off the end. She fussed a bit, but was fine once I moved her back up onto her pillow.

After doing well on Saturday night, we let her sleep in it again last night. This was a bit rougher on her as she actually fell out of bed at 2:30 AM. She woke up laying on the floor, about 2 feet away from the bed. She had hit her foot on her dresser and was complaining about that. Once again, I picked her up and put her back on her pillow, and she was back asleep with a couple of minutes. Looks like she has graduated to the bed and we can think about taking the crib down and out of the room.

Potty Training

This weekend, we decided to start to potty train Sarah. We were out shopping a week or so ago and found a Dora the Explorer padded potty seat, and with her love of Dora right now, figured this would be a good way to get her started. We told her that Dora would help her learn to use the "big potty", and she was happy with that.

We started out well, with her using the potty twice, going both times, but it's been difficult for us to keep up with it. We are going to need to get a folding seat cover so that we can take one with us to the mall, etc. She isn't coming up to us yet asking to go, but if you ask her if she needs to go, she is pretty honest about it. Both times that she want, she said she had to go, and she did. Of course the Thomas stickers she get's as a reward help things along a bit.

She's so cute when she is done, she get's so proud of herself and claps her hands. I'm sure it will take some time, and commitment on all of our parts, but school will help out during the day. She seems ready to learn. But are we ready for her to learn?

Silly Girl

It has been a long time since I (mommy) have posted and lately Sarah has been doing some very silly things. I went to get her up for "school" on Tuesday morning and she decided to "tinkle" several times while she was getting dressed for the day. I ended up just giving her a bath from the waist down after about 3 incidents on her changing table. The craziness didn't stop there.

Our Little Houdini

Picture this.... I am drive 65 or 70 MPH on Rte 30 on my way to take Sarah to school. When I look in the mirror to check on her, she has unbuckled the top part of her harness and has her arms flalling about over her head. I wasn't sure what to do as I was in the left hand lane and it wasn't ideal to just pull over. So, I made my way to the left lane and off at the next exit..the whole time thinking and hoping to myself "just stay in your seat, don't get the rest of the way out!!!!" I got her back together and off we went but for a minute I wasn't sure I could take my eyes off the mirror to watch the road. What if I hadn't looked at that moment, she may have been in the passanger seat acting like shes a grownup. I can't wait for the "terrible twos". :)

I am so smrt (I mean smart)

Yesterday, Karen told me that the day care where we are sending Sarah during the day wants to move her up to the next classroom. Claire did an excellent job with making her participate in the classroom activities when she was at K-Prep, that she is very advanced and independent and just wants to read books and play constructively. The other kids won't let her do these activities, so they want to move her and expose her to more advanced kids to continue to push her in her learning and independence. They just want her to be able to walk a bit more steadily before they move her full time. They are going to try it out a couple of days a week.

Almost walking

Late last week, presumably at school, Sarah started on the path to walking independently. She is now able to stand on her own for a short period of time, upwards of 30 seconds as she demonstrated last night. She can also go from standing to taking a few steps, but she get's too excited and her top gets going faster than her legs, and she falls over. She is not a patient person, like her father :) She also showed us last night that she can push herself up from sitting to standing, without any outside help or anything to hold onto. We were all clapping when she did this and she had quite the confused look on her face, it was soo cute.

It's been hard to get pictures of her standing because she just wants the camera, and of course, the easiest way to get it is to crawl. I'll see what I can get and post them when I do.

So Smart!!

Sarah is so smart. She is starting to learn her colors and some of her body parts. For the longest time, we have been playing "head, shoulders, knees and toes" with her, and she has now picked up on some of the parts and can point them out when you ask her to. She knows her head, her nose, and her mouth. She can also point out a few colors, like yellow and purple. Not sure why these colors, but if I had her the string of beeds and ask her where either of those colors are, she will get it right almost every time! Again, I have no idea when she should be able to do this, but I think she is so smart.

words words words...

It's been a long time since I've posted (and uploaded pictures, I know). So much has changed with Sarah over the past couple of weeks, let along months. She now freely rolls back and forth, goes from sitting to laying down by flopping onto her head and then scooting her legs out from under her. She is also very close to crawling, infact, she will push with her feet to get to a toy or bottle that we sit in front of her. She just needs to get her big belly off the floor and she will be unstoppable.

Sarah has also started "talking" a bit. She has been babbling for a while, and this really picked up a month ago. She can now say mama, papa, dada, baba (bottle), and the best of all, Elmo. Yes, she says Elmo. Her lightswitch cover in her room is Elmo (like everything else) and today she looked up at it and said Elmo, not just once, but again later for Karen. It wasn't her first word, but close.

Happy 5 monthiversary!

Yesterday, Sarah turned 5 months. It's been a wonderful time, even beyond my wildest imagination. Karen has been asking me for a few weeks now when we can start giving Sarah "real food". She has been getting rice cereal at night for over a month now, and we recently upped that to twice a day about 2 weeks ago. She has done really well with it, and in fact, get's cranky when she doesn't get her cereal. She has us so well trained. I decided that last night would be a good time to start giving her some of the "real food".

Gerber has an organic line of foods under the name Tender Harvest that we both decided we would use exclusively while Sarah is still on baby food. We started with the recommended bananas. I don't think she really liked them. She kept making strange faces as we were shoveling it in, but continued to eat. Eventually, Karen had to mix some of it in with her oatmeal cereal so she would eat more. I have some video of the adventure that I will post once I get it edited.

Guess we'll have to see how she does with the bananas tonite.

rollin', rollin', rollin'

Last night Sarah was laying on our bed with her daddy and she finally rolled over on her own (belly to back). Doug said to make sure that it wasn't because the bed is soft and she wasn't "helped" put her on the floor. I did and she did it again several times throughout the evening. Of course she doesn't perform on command yet but she'll get there. We can't wait to show everyone.....

Sleeping through the night

The past 2 nights, Sarah has slept for 7+ hours, basically through the whole night. She has been sleeping from about 11:30 to roughly 5:00 or 5:30 fairly consistently, but the past 2 nights, it has stretched. And as a result of this, she is wide awake through most of the day.
She has also started to grow out of her 2 hour fussy time at night where she just screams for no apparent reason. This is the most trying time for me, although I know she just needs to be held and comforted. I really enjoy spending time with her, especially when she is happy and all curious about everything. I don't know what I would do without her.

Wow she has changed

Well, Sarah is now 6 weeks old as of Wednesday. She has changed immensely in all aspects of her. The way she acts, the noises she makes, the way she looks, everything. She is actually getting to a point where she can just lay down and look at the world around her and be content (for a short period of time). This is the beginning of the stage that I was/am really looking forward to. Don't get me wrong, I love just holding her, but I want her to experience so many things that she just needs to experience on her own.

Last week, Karen bought her a mat with dangling toys that she can play on. She wasn't too fond of it at first, but she is getting more used to it, and she enjoys looking at all the colors. We also have been putting her in her crib for short periods of time and she seems very content with that. We put a mobile up that came with her pack 'n play, and she is most amused by that. Of course, it is not one that spins itself, so I have to stand there and spin it, but she really likes it. Guess we'll have to buy one now.

Grow child grow

Today while feeding Sarah, she decided to help Karen hold up her bottle. Yes, we are breastfeeding, but using bottles if she get's too worked up to eat. It was sooo cute. I'm sure it is completely just reflex and not something she realized she was doing, but it was still cute and made me so proud.

Her feeding schedule has been a bit off today, and we called the doctor like neurotic parents. They moved her appointment up to tomorrow. They actually said that they wanted to see her at about a week old, and not 2 weeks like our appointments was scheduled. I'm sure everything is fine, she is still getting used to everything. I just want to be the best parent I can, and I worry about her constantly. This could be interesting for the next 50 years.
